A favorite to win the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials, Mendelblatt led during most of the eight-day regatta. But it came down to the final race and he lost the overall championship and his Olympic bid to John Myrdal. With earlier, harder training, Mendelblatt avenged that disappointment with a commanding win over Myrdal at the 2004 Trials. "We've got a really good rivalry going and a good friendship," Mendelblatt told the St. Petersburg Times. "In a way, I kind of wish we could both go."
On the Olympic rule not to drop the worst race from overall scores: “At the Athens Regatta this year, Siren Sundby won, but she won counting a DNC. First she broke her mast, then later got her second yellow flag and had to retire. Still, she managed to win because she was the best sailor in the regatta, and the best sailors will prevail whether there's a throw-out or not.”
